Avoid the Christmas kilo Crisis

Christmas is an exciting time of year. There is a buzz in the air as everyone gears up for parties, holidays and family time. Christmas carols belt out from the shopping malls and delicious foods fill the supermarket shelves. Everyone wants to catch up for dinner or a drink, but time is limited so something has to give; usually it’s the workout. The question is how do you avoid coming out the other side of Christmas without a few extra kilos?

Don’t go to a Christmas party hungry:
A mistake that’s easy to make is to avoid eating before a Christmas function so you can save the calories for the party. This is not a good idea for a few reasons. Once you start missing meals, or restricting your calorie intake, your metabolism will slow down, which is definitely not what you want. It also means that by the time you get to the party you will be starving, and will eat whatever is available instead of making good choices. It is a much safer option to eat your normal days food, and then have a protein rich snack before the function. Try some whole meal crackers with low fat cheese, a nut or protein bar, or a protein shake.  You will then be able to enjoy socializing without worrying about eating unnecessary calories.

Plan your exercise in advance:
Christmas is a busy time; you book in hairdressers, coffee with friends, shopping trips, parties, so why not book in your exercise. Get out your diary and schedule in your workouts just like you would any other commitment. You will feel energized after workout and ready to face the next round of social engagements.
Better still; why not suggest you meet friends for a walk, swim or a game of tennis, followed by dinner and a drink.

Keep an eye on your drinks:
It’s so easy to lose willpower after a few drinks.  Pizza and hot chips always taste better at the end of a night out. To avoid letting alcohol get control, alternate your drinks with water. You will slow down the effects of the alcohol and keep yourself hydrated. Offer to be the designated driver, that way you have to stay sober and responsible.

Eat sensibly:
Christmas eating is all about making the right choices. You don’t have to avoid eating all the good things, just choose wisely. Here are some foods swaps you can try:

1.     Instead of calorie rich fruitcake and custard, try a mini pavlova with low-fat yoghurt and fruit.
2.     Instead of reaching for the chips, try pretzels.
3.     Try toasted pita bread with salsa, or carrot sticks with hummus instead of crackers and dip.
4.     Turkey breast without skin is a better alternative than turkey leg with skin and smothered in gravy.
5.     Drink plenty of water, it will help fill you up and is a much healthier choice than fruit juice or soft drink.

My golden rule is “everything in moderation”. You can enjoy Christmas without losing track of your healthy lifestyle. Encourage the family to get out for a walk after Christmas lunch, or go to the park and play a game of cricket. Eat sensibly, keep moving and have a wonderful festive season.
